Tamper Proof Screws

Tamper proof screws come in several different types and the choice might seem bewildering to a newcomer who just wants to protect their property or mend their boundary fence.  The main purpose of any tamper proof screw or security fastener is to prevent a casual thief or miscreant from removing it with normal tools within a certain time period.

Of course no tamper proof screw or security fastener will withstand a determined and well informed engineer with an appropriate set of hand and power tools.  The issues facing your opponent are: how long it takes to remove one screw; how much noise it makes to remove it; and how much effort is involved.  All these factors need to be taken into consideration before making your choice of what is appropriate for your particular application.

In order to make an informed decision we need to first determine whether it will ever be necessary for the screw or fixing to be undone for any reason.  The alternative is what we call a permanent solution where the only way to remove the fixing or screw would be to destroy it.  Therfore the two categories are permanent or non-permanent tamper proof screws, fixings and fasteners.  These are as follows:

Under this category are screws that require a special tool to tighten them.  Only a person equiped with the correct tool can efficiently undo the screw.  We say ‘efficiently’ because technically speaking there might be a number of ways to undo the screw without the correct tool – such as a hammer and chisel, or angle grinder, but hopefully most miscreants wouldn’t have these tools handy and even if they did, they would find them too labourious and noisy.
